The city was somber today. There was a heavy gray, almost purple sky hanging overhead. The air smelled of moisture but not a drop had touched down. The early morning traffic had yet to hit the streets in full force so there was a silent hum left over from the night before, no horns blaring or people shouting from frustration. Pedestrians stepped silently over the pavement, all keeping to themselves, distracted from the world by their handheld devices. Even the birds fluttering about the tops of buildings seemed to be doing so quietly. Were it not for the warm tension in the air, the city might almost seem peaceful. Almost.
"Really hope we're all good to go here." Dain said as he took another drag from his cigarette.
Tucked between two towers was Dain's electric blue convertible, its engine warm and running though it's seats were cold and empty. Tucked between his lips was a lit half-bent cigarette, the smoke from which existed through his nostrils. Atop the bridge of his nose sat his signature shades, despite there being no sunlight out for him to need them. His hair was as messy as ever, a symptom of driving in a convertible car with the top constantly down. The dark brown duster on his shoulders kept him warm and hid the too tight jeans he'd borrowed from his friend Zank and the black t-shirt that ran just a little too high, also a donation from Zank. Dain felt confined and restricted as he waited helplessly, hoping that everyone was ready and their plan would go off without a hitch.
High above one of the buildings looming over Dain was Zank, crouched and tucked behind the edge of the short wall keeping him from sight. The bright hairs on his head that'd normally be an eyesore were hidden under a gray stocking cap, his upper body was covered in a tight thin jacket and his lower body was in a matching pair of form fitting gym pants. Nestled in his right ear was a Bluetooth earpiece that linked him to Guenn.
The plan was three fold; have Dain meet his contacts at the ground level and get eyes on their targets. Then track said targets through the streets of the city back to their base of operations. Then infiltrate that base to confront and eliminate the threat to their compatriots. On paper, it looked simple enough and as long as everything went according to plan they'd make it home in time for dinner. Even as he watched though, Zank was making plans for things to go awry. When they did, he wanted to be ready. He wanted all of them to be ready.
"Hunny, how's it looking from your angle?" Zank turned his sight to the building diagonal from him, it was the best position to have her in after all. Though he himself had no problem with heights and distance, Guenn's different abilities made her more suitable for anticipatory reconnaissance. If, for whatever reason, Zank was unable to follow along beside while maneuvering atop the buildings he knew Guenn could pick up the slack from ahead and maintain visual if he lost their quarry.
Of course they still had a couple of aces up their sleeve. Along the front end of the alley Leo strode on his new slimline bicycle that Dain had purchased for him the day before. His ability to get through the city without having to worry as much about traffic and other cars would be invaluable. The boy had access to shortcuts most ground level vehicles could only dream of. They'd given him his own Bluetooth headset to keep contact with Maddie and the rest of the group as well. For a kid, Leo had made off like it was Christmas.
As if that weren't enough, they'd also rounded everything off with Maddie on her motorcycle. The group had taken precautions to keep her hidden from the people watching her. Zank had dropped her off in one crowded area, she had shuffled her way around and Guenn had picked her up elsewhere to take her some other place. Then she was picked up by an Uber driver that Zank had arranged for ahead of time. Dain had given Zank the money needed to get her a motorcycle for the day, all the equipment needed, Bluetooth enabled helmet included, but kept his name and hands away from tipping off the group as to their plan. When her driver had finally taken her to the designated parking garage where the bike and getup laid ready for her, even Zank had lost track of her. They'd given her an area to wait at, hidden behind her biker's helmet, which was one street down and a block behind the meeting point. She was there to help keep an eye on things from afar, and rendezvous with Leo when the time came. For now, Zank hoped everyone was in place and prepared for anything.
